Three individuals have been arrested in connection with a fatal dog attack in Tullahoma, Tennessee, which resulted in the deaths of a grandfather and his three-month-old granddaughter. The incident occurred in December 2025, when James Smith, 50, and his infant granddaughter were found dead after being attacked by family dogs. According to reports from NBC affiliate WSMB, officers arrived at the home and found the dogs still attacking the child’s body. Zaccahae Smith, Sylvia Smith, and Tilesia Baugh were taken into custody and face multiple felony charges related to the deaths. Zaccahae Smith has been charged with second-degree murder, while Sylvia Smith faces three counts of child abuse and neglect. Tilesia Baugh is charged with two counts of child abuse and neglect, plus one count of aggravated child abuse and neglect. Investigators are currently determining whether the dog attack directly caused the deaths or occurred after the victims had already died. The household reportedly owned seven dogs, which neighbors said had previously chased other animals in the area but had not shown aggression toward humans. Neighbors described the scene as heartbreaking. Rebecca Adams, a local resident, told the outlet that the mother of the victims was screaming as animal control officers arrived. “My heart just shattered,” Adams said, adding that the tragedy was hard to believe. She noted that the dogs had always been aggressive toward animals but never toward people. “I could see them be aggressive towards animals. Never did I think they would do that to the kids,” she said. Many residents drove by the house to witness the scene, some seeking confirmation of the events. The incident has left the family in severe hardship. Relatives have launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover memorial costs and support the surviving household members. The campaign states that the family lost not only two lives but also their home and belongings within hours of the tragedy. The grandfather, who did not have life insurance, left the family with the burden of funeral expenses. As of Tuesday, the campaign had raised $49,145 toward its $55,000 goal, with more than 1,000 donations. The grandmother is now caring for six remaining children who suddenly find themselves without clothes, beds, or a place to go.
