Disgraced former megachurch pastor Robert Morris was recently photographed with a black eye in a new entry on Texas’s sex offender registry. Morris, who founded the large Christian church Gateway Church, was convicted last year of sexually assaulting a young girl more than 40 years ago. On Tuesday, the Texas registry updated Morris’s profile with a new image showing a noticeable black bruise around his right eye. Morris, now 65, pleaded guilty in October 2025 to charges of indecent conduct with a child, following allegations that he sexually assaulted a girl in Oklahoma in the early 1980s. According to Morris’s attorney, Bill Mateja, the injury occurred when Morris was in his garage and leaned over to pick up an object. When he stood up, he passed out and fell, first hitting a car door and then the concrete floor. His wife, Debbie, was present during the incident. Morris was taken to the hospital via ambulance, where doctors confirmed he had broken three bones in his face. They believe the injury may have been caused by the sudden movement combined with his recent use of blood pressure medication on an empty stomach. His lawyer stated that, aside from the facial injuries, Morris was otherwise unharmed. Morris led Gateway Church, a megachurch based in Southlake, Texas, for 24 years before resigning in 2024. His resignation followed allegations that he sexually assaulted Cindy Clemshire starting in 1982, when she was just 12 years old. The abuse reportedly took place at her family’s home in Oklahoma, where Morris was visiting as a traveling preacher. The abuse is said to have continued for four years. Although Clemshire reported the abuse to her parents and church leaders in 1987, charges against Morris were not filed until decades later. In October 2025, Morris was sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Osage County District Court, but under a plea agreement, he only had to serve six months in jail. Clemshire, who was 55 at the time of Morris’s sentencing, told CBS News Texas that the most important thing for her was that Morris pleaded guilty to all five counts and served some time in prison. While many might consider the sentence insufficient, she said it ensured he would face consequences for his actions. Court records indicate that Morris is now serving probation at his $1.5 million lakefront home in Palo Pinto County, Texas. While on probation, he must report his location to a probation officer, is prohibited from consuming alcohol, carrying a firearm, or associating with other convicted felons.
