Fenerbahçe signs Dwight Powell

Fenerbahçe has officially signed Dwight Powell, a 35-year-old Canadian center who previously played for the Dallas Mavericks. The contract is for the remainder of the season, and Powell was released by Dallas earlier this year, though he still played in the Mavericks' preseason games.

Powell’s career background

Powell was selected in the 2014 NBA draft by the Charlotte Hornets, who later transferred his rights to the Cleveland Cavaliers. He played for several teams, including the Boston Celtics, before joining the Mavericks with Rajon Rondo. He has played 768 NBA games, averaging 6.5 points and 4.2 rebounds per game.

Powell’s college and early career

Born in Toronto on July 20, 1991, Powell attended Stanford University, where he was named the most improved player in the Pac-12 conference in 2012-2013. He averaged 14.9 points and 8.4 rebounds in 34 games that season and was selected to the all-conference team in his final year at Stanford.

Recent performance and Olympic appearance

Last season, Powell averaged 3.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game in 14 minutes, shooting 64.4% from the field. He also played in the 2024 NBA Finals with the Mavericks and was part of the Canadian team at the Paris Olympics, where they were eliminated in the quarterfinals by France.

Fenerbahçe’s current situation

Powell joins Fenerbahçe, which already has three centers in its Euroleague roster: Chris Silva, Marcus Bingham, and Sertaç Şanlı. The team, coached by Sarunas Jasikevicius, has a 6-3 record in the Euroleague after nine games but has lost two matches in a row. Their upcoming schedule includes games against Baskonia, Paris Basketball, and ASVEL.
