A 39-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault after police responded to a disturbance at Teesside Crematorium during the funeral of 17-year-old Cole Worthy. The incident occurred on Wednesday at around 12:30 pm, during a service marking the life of Worthy, who was one of five young men killed in a tragic crash on August 22. The crash also claimed the lives of two armed response officers, Pc Matthew Blades, 37, and Pc Tom Clough, 38, when their vehicle was involved in a head-on collision on the A66. Cleveland Police attended the service and allowed the funeral to continue shortly after the disturbance. Officers remained in the area to provide reassurance to attendees and the public. The disruption comes after earlier reports of a vehicle ramming and causing extensive damage to a property in Middlesbrough linked to Cole Worthy. Police had previously suggested that the individuals involved in the incident may have connections to organized crime. The funeral for Cole Worthy took place at the same time as the service for Pc Matthew Blades in Hartlepool, highlighting the emotional and communal impact of the tragedy. Despite earlier political debates about whether schools should remain open during funerals for victims of the crash, local schools stayed open during Worthy’s ceremony. This decision followed previous discussions about the appropriateness of school closures during such events, reflecting the complex balance between public mourning and the needs of the education system.
