Enhanced security for October 24 mobilization day

The French government has announced increased resources for the mobilization day on October 24, aiming to address weaknesses in the current system for maintaining public order during the event. The government plans to shift its approach from "act I" to "act II," which will focus on more dynamic and responsive strategies for managing security on that day.

Deployment of military forces

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez confirmed that the army's Sentinelle forces will be deployed to take over static security missions typically handled by police and gendarmes. This move aims to free up those forces to focus on maintaining order in more active areas during the event.

Strengthening security units

Nuñez announced plans to increase the number of available personnel and reinforce deployed units, similar to the approach taken in July 2023. This includes mobilizing elite units such as the BRI, GIGN, RAID, helicopters, Centaures, and water launchers, which were already deployed on October 17 but are now being expanded upon.

Considering bans on unregistered demonstrations

The Interior Minister also mentioned the possibility of banning unregistered demonstrations that could lead to public order issues. This would also apply to registered demonstrations if their organizers or security teams are deemed untrustworthy in ensuring the event proceeds without disruption.

Focus on mobility and reactivity

Nuñez emphasized the need for a security doctrine that prioritizes reactivity and mobility to effectively target dispersed and highly mobile groups. This approach is meant to improve the government’s ability to respond quickly and efficiently to any potential disturbances.

Massive police deployment announced

Shortly before the announcement, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu confirmed a "massive" police deployment for October 24. He acknowledged that the previous security strategy had been too static and lacked the necessary mobility to handle the challenges of the event effectively.
