Tesla announced on Monday, September 7, that its Full Self-Driving (FSD) "Supervised" system has been validated in Slovenia. The news was shared on Tesla’s X account for Europe, and Elon Musk personally posted the update. Slovenian Energy and Infrastructure Minister Jernej Vrtovec congratulated the country on this development. This marks the sixth European country to approve Tesla’s FSD software, which is designed to allow vehicles to operate with minimal human intervention under certain conditions. Slovenia uses a process called mutual recognition to approve autonomous driving systems. This means it accepts the original approval given by the Dutch authority, RDW, in April, without conducting its own independent evaluation. As a result, Slovenia now joins the Netherlands, Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark, and Belgium, which have already approved the FSD software. Tesla is now aiming for a broader European approval through the technical committee for motor vehicles (TCMV), where a vote is expected on October 6. To gain approval, at least 15 member states must support the measure, representing 65% of the European population. However, the six countries that have already approved the FSD account for only 40 million people, far below the 294 million needed to meet the threshold. The outcome of the vote remains uncertain, as many other countries have not yet given their approval. France initially refused the FSD system but later reversed its stance, announcing plans to conduct road tests after discussions between Elon Musk and French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot. Spain has also said no, while Sweden and Finland have expressed some concerns. In recent weeks, Tesla has been working to secure more support, including through direct meetings with Musk and the release of safety data in early September. These efforts appear to be part of a final push to gain broader acceptance of its autonomous driving technology across Europe.
