On Tuesday, October 6, students and high school students across France gathered to express their frustration and anger, primarily over issues related to education, policing, and social inequality. These demonstrations were part of a broader wave of mobilizations that have drawn significant public attention in recent days. The program À l'air libre provided a platform for discussing these historic mobilizations and the police repression that the young protesters have faced. Hosted by Mathieu Magnaudeix, the program was prepared by Samia Dechir, Mathilde Goanec, Mathieu Mialaret, and Raphaël Gribe Marquis, who brought together a diverse group of participants for in-depth discussion. Among the participants was Bally Bagayoko, the mayor of Saint-Denis and a member of the political party La France insoumise (LFI). Also present was Manel Ben Boubaker, a history-geography teacher in Seine-Saint-Denis and co-author of Entering Antiracist Pedagogy (Shed Publishing, 2023). She is also part of the editorial committee of the feminist journal La Déferlante. Cyrielle Chatelain, president of the ecological group in the National Assembly, joined the discussion, as did Jérôme Herbrich, principal of a professional high school in Paris and representative of staff supervisors at CFDT Education Formation Recherche Publiques. Other participants included Sabrine Kharbach, spokesperson for the Student Union, and Kamelia, a high school student in Seine-Saint-Denis, who shared her experiences firsthand. Youssef Souidi, an economist and political scientist, contributed his insights as the author of Toward School Secession? Mechanics of Segregation in Middle School (Fayard, 2024) and co-author of New Electoral Cartography of France (Textuel, 2026). Juliette Triquet, a lawyer and signatory of a statement calling for an end to the harm, confinement, and silencing of young people, also took part in the discussion. The program also featured Sebastian Roché, a sociologist and research director at CNRS. He has written extensively on policing and youth issues, including On Police in Democracy (Grasset, 2016), The Unfinished Nation: Youth Facing School and Police (Grasset, 2022), and The Police Against the Street (Grasset, 2023). His contributions provided a critical perspective on the relationship between youth, education, and law enforcement in contemporary France.
