Miranda Hart has described her return to television on The Celebrity Traitors as "challenging," revealing the physical and emotional hurdles she has faced since her diagnosis with myalgic encephalomyelitis, or chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). The 53-year-old comedian, known for her role in Call the Midwife, will appear on the BBC show alongside Richard E. Grant, Romesh Ranganathan, and Michael Sheen, which launches on October 1. Hart explained that the condition, which has left her bedbound and without joy at times, has made her TV comeback a difficult but meaningful step forward.
Hart has largely stepped away from the public eye over the past five years due to her health struggles, with only occasional appearances on chat shows and charity events like Comic Relief. When offered a spot on The Celebrity Traitors, she said her body "relaxed" and she felt a sense of joy she hadn't experienced in a long time. "I'm still living with elements of ME," she said, "and that brings fatigue and pain to manage, but I have come to a point where I feel well enough to step out."
Despite the challenges, Hart is optimistic about the experience, acknowledging it will be physically demanding but also a chance to reconnect with the joy of television. She also highlighted the invisibility of chronic illness, noting that people often don't realize someone is in pain. "Everybody's got their thing," she said, adding that she is excited to make friends and support each other on the show.
Miranda first became unwell at 15, and her condition worsened in her mid-40s, leading to a period of severe debilitation. Doctors initially struggled to diagnose her condition, with some even suggesting she was fine, until she was eventually diagnosed with Lyme disease, a bacterial infection transmitted through tick bites. "I wasn't going to collapse and die of it, luckily," she said, but the lack of understanding around chronic fatigue conditions was a persistent challenge.
The Celebrity Traitors will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer starting Thursday, October 1, at 8pm.
