New film release details

David Fincher’s new film, The New Adventures of Cliff Booth, will premiere in U.S. theaters in one month before its global release on Netflix on December 23. The film is a sequel to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

End of a long partnership

Fincher has decided not to renew his exclusivity contract with Netflix, ending a 13-year collaboration that produced acclaimed works such as House of Cards, Mindhunter, Mank, and The Killer.

Reasons for the split

According to Page Six, the split stems from both artistic and financial disagreements between Fincher and Dan Lin, who was then the head of Netflix’s film division. These tensions reportedly influenced Fincher’s decision to leave the platform.

Complicated production process

After mixed reactions during initial test screenings, Fincher requested Netflix to fund additional reshoots for The New Adventures of Cliff Booth. These reshoots required rebuilding sets and extending post-production, which Netflix initially refused to fund before eventually granting a few extra days of filming.

High production costs

The film already cost around 200 million dollars to produce, a significant sum for Netflix, which has been trying to manage the rising costs of its original content for several years. The platform has not yet commented on the contract non-renewal.

Future availability

Regardless of the split, The New Adventures of Cliff Booth will be available on Netflix on December 23, as planned.
