Previously unreleased music from David Bowie's early career will be available to buy and stream for the first time. This collection includes five songs discovered by music historian Alec Palao, who found them marked as "Davie Jones"—Bowie's birth name—on a 12-inch acetate record in the collection of Shel Talmy, Bowie's first professional producer. Additional previously unheard tracks were later obtained by Palao. These recordings, along with demos and remastered versions of older songs, make up a new posthumous album titled The Shel Talmy Recordings. Six of the tracks will be released on vinyl, with limited editions available at Record Store Day and HMV stores.
The recordings offer a rare look into 1960s London and the formative years of a teenage Bowie, who was performing under his birth name at local clubs. Many of these tracks from that period were either obscure or lost over time. The album was licensed by Palao and Talmy Enterprises Incorporated to Warner Music Group, which will distribute it through its subsidiary, Parlophone. Royalties from the album will be directed to Bowie's estate.
Dana Gillespie, an early collaborator of Bowie's, described the tracks as songs that "don't really sound like David but it's him trying to find his voice." She met Bowie when she was 17 after one of his performances at London's Marquee Club. Gillespie became close friends with Bowie and worked with him on his iconic Ziggy Stardust album. She recalled Bowie's determination, saying he once told her, "Whatever it takes, I want to get out of here."
One of the newly released songs, "I Pity The Fool," was played for Gillespie by Bowie at the Gioconda café in Denmark Street, a popular gathering spot for musicians in 1960s London. A remastered version of the track is included in the new album. Palao described the recordings as "absolutely pure rock 'n' roll" and highlighted their significance for music historians, fans, and those who were part of Bowie's early career.
