University of Nantes halts building use

The University of Nantes has declared five lecture halls unusable after student protests caused significant damage, with repair costs estimated at one million euros.

Minister visits damaged campus

The Minister of Higher Education, Research, and Space, Philippe Baptiste, visited the Tertre campus on October 15 to inspect the damage to the Censive building, which had been occupied by protesters from October 7 to October 10.

Building evacuated by police

The Censive building was evacuated by law enforcement after three days of occupation, as part of broader student and high school protests across France.

Damage includes equipment and systems

According to reports, the damage includes broken computer equipment and damage to the electrical system, with debris removal and cleaning of the premises already beginning.

University president criticizes actions

Carine Bernault, president of Nantes University, expressed "disgust" at the situation, noting that the Censive building is part of a major renovation project for the 10,000 students who use it at least once a week.

Building closure until 2027

The building will remain closed until the damage is fully assessed and repairs are completed, with an expected reopening in January 2027.

Minister calls for legal action

Baptiste described the actions as "the destruction of a public asset" and stated he would support the justice system in addressing the violence and damage.
