Millions of Cuisinart barbecue utensils have been recalled after reports that customers accidentally swallowed their metal bristles. This latest warning follows a previous recall in July 2026, which affected 1.7 million of these products. Now, over 3.6 million Metal Wire Bristle Grill Brushes are under a safety alert. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warns that the bristles can become detached and stick to food or grills, potentially leading to serious injuries if ingested. These injuries could require surgery, according to the CPSC. "Consumers should stop using the recalled grill brushes immediately," the warning states.
The CPSC reports that Conair, Cuisinart's parent company, is aware of at least 54 cases where the bristles became loose. Three of those cases involved individuals who swallowed the bristles and required medical intervention to remove them from their throat or digestive system. The August 2026 recall included around 1,905,805 units, while the July 2026 recall covered about 1,719,995 units. Together, this totals approximately 3,625,800 affected products. These brushes were sold nationwide at retailers like TJ Maxx, Burlington, Walmart, Amazon, and directly through Cuisinart. They were available from June 2009 until March 2026, priced between $8 and $20.
Consumers who purchased the recalled products can contact Conair for a full refund or request a credit equivalent to the product's price, plus 20 percent in cash. The CPSC urges customers to dispose of the recalled brushes immediately. A spokesperson for Cuisinart said the company is committed to consumer safety and has worked closely with the CPSC to address the issue. They encourage customers who believe they have an affected product to stop using it right away.
Other companies have also recalled similar products earlier this year. Nexgrill recalled about 10.2 million brushes, and Weber recalled around 3.2 million. Minnesota mother Amie Walden shared her story with People magazine, describing how her son required surgery after swallowing a metal bristle during a barbecue. The bristle was found in his intestines, and doctors removed three inches of his bowel. Walden described the surgery as life-changing, with ongoing risks of complications such as scar tissue and bowel reconnection issues.
