Researchers at Virginia Tech have developed a new type of degradable polymer with a unique molecular structure that combines strength, flexibility, and the ability to block oxygen. This innovation could lead to improved food packaging materials that protect food from oxygen exposure while being durable enough to handle processing, transportation, and storage. The study, published in Nature Communications, was led by Rong Tong, a professor of chemical engineering, and Yifan Cheng, an assistant professor of food science and technology, with contributions from several graduate students.
Traditional plastics are made of long, linear molecular chains. To create their new material, the Virginia Tech team rearranged these chains into continuous rings. This cyclic structure, combined with a "gradient" design—where the composition of the molecules gradually changes within each ring—allowed the polymers to achieve a rare combination of properties. These materials were able to block oxygen as effectively as polylactic acid (PLA), a well-known biodegradable plastic, but with significantly greater toughness and flexibility.
Oxygen blocking is crucial for food packaging because exposure to oxygen can cause food to spoil or lose quality. While PLA is effective at blocking oxygen, it is also brittle, limiting its use in packaging that requires flexibility and durability. The Virginia Tech polymers matched PLA’s oxygen-blocking ability but were much tougher and more stretchable, making them more suitable for practical packaging applications.
Although the materials show promise, they are not yet ready for commercial use. Tong and Cheng plan to further test the polymers by processing them into films and other forms to evaluate their performance under real-world conditions. They also aim to determine whether the molecular components can be recycled or recovered after use. Tong emphasized the importance of recyclability, stating that while the material is degradable, the ability to recover and reuse its building blocks could make it more economically viable for widespread applications.
