Alonso's Singapore race was difficult

Fernando Alonso, a two-time world champion, had a tough time during the Singapore Grand Prix, finishing 17th after starting from the pit lane. He blamed the Honda power unit for several malfunctions that affected his performance, even though engine power usually plays a smaller role on the urban circuit.

Aston Martin hoped for better results

Aston Martin had hoped to score points in Singapore, following Alonso's eighth-place finish in Malaysia the previous week. However, both Alonso and his teammate Lance Stroll started from the pit lane due to technical issues with their power units and suspensions. Stroll eventually retired from the race, while Alonso finished 16th.

Alonso criticized Honda's performance

Alonso expressed frustration during the race, especially after being overtaken by a Red Bull. In a private radio message, he said, "The energy is not deploying... This engine is so ridiculous," after a sarcastic laugh. This comment echoed a similar remark he made earlier in the season while driving for McLaren-Honda.

Technical issues detailed by Alonso

Alonso described several technical problems with the Honda power unit, including the turbocharger's response time during acceleration in slow corners. He emphasized the need to resolve these issues ahead of upcoming races, stating, "We need to understand why, because several difficult races are coming." A broken turbo had to be replaced before the race, which Alonso said was not an excuse for the performance issues.

Concerns for future races

Alonso is worried about the Honda power unit's weaknesses, especially in upcoming races in Mexico and Las Vegas, where the circuits may highlight its shortcomings. Team principal Lawrence Stroll is considering visiting Japan to address the issues and improve performance for future events.
