Jurgen Klopp, the former manager of Liverpool and current coach of Germany's national team, has defended midfielder Florian Wirtz's performances at Liverpool, stating that the player joined the club "at the worst possible moment." Wirtz was signed in a £116 million deal from Bayer Leverkusen last year but struggled to make an impact during his first season, scoring seven goals and recording nine assists in 48 appearances. This season, under new manager Andoni Iraola, Wirtz has continued to face challenges, managing just one assist in six games so far. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has suggested that Iraola should consider dropping Wirtz for the upcoming Premier League match against Manchester City on October 11. Klopp, who is now managing Wirtz for Germany, has spoken about the difficult circumstances surrounding Wirtz's transition to Liverpool. He referenced the tragic death of Diogo Jota, a Liverpool forward who passed away in July last year, as a significant factor in the midfielder's struggles. "What is spoken in Liverpool and England in general would go far too far and create headlines we definitely do not want to create right now," Klopp said during a press conference with Germany's national team. He emphasized that Wirtz's footballing abilities are unquestionable and that the team is working to help him regain his form on the pitch. Klopp explained that Wirtz arrived at Liverpool during a challenging period, noting that the club had many players for whom football had temporarily become a lower priority following Jota's death. "He came into a team with an incredible number of players for whom football had quite understandably dropped down the list of priorities," Klopp said. "Then you come along as a new player and everyone immediately looks for someone to pull their chestnuts out of the fire. That is simply impossible." Klopp acknowledged that Wirtz has learned a lot over the past year and is now in good physical condition, having played in most games this season. He emphasized the importance of a functioning team around attacking players and noted that being in the spotlight can be difficult. While he did not elaborate further, Klopp expressed confidence in Wirtz's abilities and stressed the need for patience and support to help him integrate into the team successfully.
