An Israeli soldier shot a Palestinian man in the leg during a confrontation in the West Bank town of Faqqua. The incident occurred when Israeli settlers entered the area with their livestock, prompting local residents to try to stop them. Israeli forces then intervened, and according to eyewitnesses, soldiers opened fire. One of the soldiers reportedly shot Qassem Hussam, a 34-year-old Palestinian, wounding him in the leg. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that a report had been received about the incident and that one of its soldiers had fired at a Palestinian. The IDF stated that the soldier had fired into the air and toward a Palestinian, and the incident was under review by military commanders. Mohammed al-Sheikh, 34, who was near Hussam during the confrontation, said the conflict began when villagers encountered Israeli settlers grazing livestock on land they claimed was Palestinian property. He described how Israeli soldiers arrived and began shooting, with one of them hitting Hussam. After the shooting, villagers helped move him to a hospital in a private car because an ambulance could not reach the area. According to the Palestine Red Crescent, Hussam was in light-to-moderate condition after the incident. The IDF said it was investigating the soldier who fired the shot, which may have violated military protocol. Video footage of the event shows Israeli soldiers and settlers confronting unarmed Palestinians before gunfire erupted. This incident adds to growing concerns about the Israeli government's ability to control violent settler activity in the occupied West Bank, where attacks have been increasing. The UK has recently taken a stronger stance on the issue, with Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband stating that the government now officially considers Israel's occupation of the West Bank unlawful. This followed a summer of diplomatic efforts and rising settler violence, which prompted several countries, including France and Canada, to impose sanctions. In response, Israel announced retaliatory measures, including closing its consulate and banning entry for several British MPs. Meanwhile, Israeli forces have carried out raids in the Jenin and Bethlehem governorates, arresting individuals and injuring a 14-year-old boy. In other areas, settlers attacked homes and vehicles, and incidents of violence have continued to escalate. According to the United Nations, more than 1,100 Palestinians, including over 240 children, have been killed in the West Bank since October 2023.
