A newly revamped boutique hotel in Rock, Cornwall, has opened to much fanfare, with chef Gordon Ramsay in attendance at the opening party, according to a recent report. The St Enodoc Hotel is a family-owned and operated property with 21 rooms, overlooking the Camel Estuary. It has been recently taken over by chef Paul Ainsworth, known for his culinary talents. The hotel, which officially opened in July 2025, emphasizes exceptional dining experiences, with the Estuary Grill as its centerpiece. This restaurant features floor-to-ceiling windows that open onto a large terrace offering views of the famous Porthilly oyster beds. Located in the heart of Rock on Cornwall’s north coast, the hotel offers stunning views across the Camel Estuary, with Padstow visible in the distance. Rock is a small village without a central hub but has a rowing club, a few upscale coffee shops, and trendy restaurants. Guests can take a 15-minute ferry ride from Rock Beach to Padstow. Nearby is the St Enodoc Church, known for its crooked spire and the burial site of poet John Betjeman. The Camel Trail, a 29.5km path along the estuary, provides flat cycling and walking routes to Wadebridge or Padstow. Camel Valley Winery, famous for its award-winning sparkling English rosé, is about a half-hour drive away. The closest beaches are Rock and Daymer Bay, while other notable beaches on the north coast include Harlyn and Constantine Bay. Newquay Airport, offering flights to London with Ryanair from £40 return, is a 40-minute drive away. The hotel’s public spaces feature interiors that are both playful and sophisticated, with fun floral wallpaper, bespoke furniture, veined marble, velvet upholstery, and a jewel-toned color palette. The space includes a selection of art, including photographs of Mick Jagger, David Bowie, and Blondie by photographer Mick Rock, as well as sculptures inspired by the coastline by British artists Dominic Welch and Lucy Unwin. The service is described as warm and friendly, though high staff turnover gives it a more formal than familial feel. Staff on the reception desk provide useful tips for exploring the area and offer helpful extras like nappy bins and complimentary wipes in rooms. The 21 rooms have undergone light-touch renovations since the takeover, with plans for full redecoration in the coming months. They are spacious, light-filled, and feature views of the Camel Estuary, with decor in whites, beiges, and blues, including subtle nautical nods. All rooms come with super king-size beds or twin beds, smart televisions, robes, tea and coffee-making facilities, and Shark hairdryers. Bathrooms are stocked with luxury body products from the Cornish skincare brand Bloom Remedies. Guests receive house-baked Paul Ainsworth cookies and a flask of Paul’s Marvellous Medicine hot chocolate with Cointreau during turn-down service. Food and drink are central to the hotel experience, with the Estuary Grill focusing on seafood and fish. The seafood tower includes whole Cornish lobster, blue fin tuna, Porthilly oysters, Orkney scallops, crab & shrimp cocktail, and king prawns. Additional offerings include small plates with a modern British vibe, sushi, salads, Indian Ocean curries, dals and biryani, Indian-inspired nibbles, a kebab/grill menu, and more sharing plates. Chef Paul Ainsworth, a protégé of Gordon Ramsay, is noted for his flavorful, colorful, and stylish dishes, though the menu's size may be overwhelming for some guests. The hotel also provides e-bikes for borrowing and a fleet of BMW cars for guests. On the terraced lawns, there are games like noughts and crosses, checkers, and petanque for children. The hotel is located up a hill with a stepped terrace, though there is a slope leading to the entrance. The Estuary Grill is fully accessible, with a lift and a disabled toilet on the ground floor. Dogs are welcome throughout the property with an overnight fee of £15 per dog. Cots and high chairs are available on request, and the hotel is family-friendly, with amenities such as nappy bins and baby wipes provided. Check-in is from 3pm, and check-out is at 11am.
