Player extends contract with Montpellier

Alexandre Bécognée has decided to stay with Montpellier, extending his contract with the club. The 30-year-old third-line player joined Montpellier in the summer of 2020 after playing for Mont-de-Marsan and had attracted interest from several other Top 14 clubs.

Contract details and future plans

Bécognée’s previous contract with Montpellier was set to expire in June 2025, and he had the right to negotiate with other clubs under the regulations. Despite this, Montpellier, led by Bernard Laporte and Mohed Altrad, aimed to convince Bécognée to continue with the team.

Club’s success and player’s role

Montpellier had hoped to retain Bécognée, who helped the club win the French championship in 2022. He also contributed to the club's successes in the Challenge Cup, including a recent victory in Bilbao. According to the website Rugbyrama, Bécognée accepted Montpellier's proposal for a contract extension last week.

New contract duration and impact

The new contract will last until June 2029. This decision is expected to please his coach Joan Caudullo, who wanted to retain Bécognée for the future. Bécognée is a key player for Montpellier, having started seven matches and scored a try against Bath in the Champions Cup.

Injury and official confirmation

The club is expected to officially confirm the extension soon. Bécognée is currently recovering from a dislocated shoulder he suffered on October 24 during Montpellier's victory over Racing 92 in the 7th round of the Top 14.
