Russian newspaper closes under pressure

Novaïa Gazeta, a long-standing independent newspaper in Russia, has announced it will stop publishing due to pressure from the government. The newspaper has been known for its critical reporting and has often challenged authorities, making it a key voice in Russian journalism.

Editor-in-chief reveals closure

Sergueï Sokolov, the editor-in-chief of Novaïa Gazeta, announced the closure in a YouTube video. He stated that the newspaper is no longer operational and that Russian authorities and special services have forced the editorial office to stop its work.

Video title reflects despair

The video, titled We are not dead, they killed us along with the Constitution, lasted just over seven minutes. Sokolov used the occasion to express his frustration and the newspaper's belief that its freedom of expression has been undermined by the government.

Closure announced on October 30

The announcement was made on Friday, October 30. This date marks the end of a significant chapter in Russian media history, as Novaïa Gazeta had been a symbol of independent journalism in the country for many years.
