New feature in testing

Google Photos is reportedly testing a feature called Group Camera, which would allow users to create a shared camera linked to a common album accessible to multiple participants. This development was uncovered by Android Authority in version 7.97 of the app, suggesting the feature is still in early stages of development.

Functionality and use cases

According to the findings, Group Camera would enable users to schedule a photo session and invite friends to join. The feature is described as particularly useful for events like birthdays, holidays, or nights out with friends, where multiple people might want to capture moments together.

Session duration and controls

By default, a session using Group Camera lasts eight hours, but users can set custom start and end times. Once a session is initiated, participants receive a notification on their smartphones inviting them to join the shared camera. They would access a dedicated interface with standard controls, including switching between front and back cameras, choosing between photo and video modes, and accessing settings.

Preview and sharing options

Before being added to the common album, the contents can be previewed, though an option exists to bypass this step for quicker sharing. Each participant can capture the event in their own way without needing to exchange photos through a messaging app, making the process more seamless.

Additional features and limitations

Android Authority also noted the possibility of converting an existing album into a Group Camera album, allowing the same album to be used for multiple events. The application code mentions a lock screen shortcut available to all participants during the session. However, the feature is still under development and not yet available to the public, with Google having neither announced a launch date nor confirmed its release.
