Dozens of homes in the High Green area of Sheffield have been evacuated and several local roads closed as police and a bomb squad investigate a property suspected of containing explosive materials. The incident began on 11 September when a forensic search was initiated at a house on Mapplebeck Road. A 36-year-old woman from the property was charged under the Explosive Substances Act on Monday and is currently in custody. Authorities have maintained a police presence at the scene while specialist officers continue their investigation. South Yorkshire Police confirmed that a new discovery on Tuesday made it necessary to evacuate nearby homes to ensure the safety of residents and emergency workers. Assistant Chief Constable Ian Proffitt acknowledged the disruption caused to the community and emphasized that the operation is being conducted carefully to avoid any risk to lives or property. “We understand you’ll have many questions about why this has happened,” he said, adding that the investigation is ongoing and active court proceedings limit what can be disclosed publicly. Roads including Mapplebeck Road, Griffiths Road, School Road, Worrall Road, Beechwood Road, Hawthorne Road, Entwhistle Road, and Greenwood Road have been closed to the public. A cordon on Mapplebeck Road is expected to remain in place throughout Friday as emergency services and specialists work to ensure the area is safe. No injuries have been reported, and other emergency services were on site as a precaution. South Yorkshire Police has expressed gratitude to residents for their patience and cooperation during the incident. Support services have been arranged for those affected, including assistance with medication, healthcare needs, and temporary accommodation for those unable to stay with family or friends. Sheffield City Council has set up a contact point for displaced residents, and those in need of help are encouraged to call the council on 0114 293 0111. Updates will be provided as the situation develops.
