Funding for low-input crops in 2027

The Seine-Normandie Water Agency has announced 8 million euros in funding for 2027 to develop low-input crop sectors, such as hemp, alfalfa, buckwheat, and sainfoin, in areas that supply drinking water. These areas cover about a third of the region’s agricultural land.

Goal to preserve water resources

The initiative aims to promote crops that use fewer agricultural inputs, helping to protect water resources used for drinking water. It complements other environmental and climate measures, including support for organic farming and reducing the use of chemical pesticides.

Eligible applicants and project requirements

The new call for interest (AMI) is open to various stakeholders, including cooperatives, farmer groups, associations, industrialists, and local authorities. Projects must be linked to one or more water intake supply areas and can include studies and investments related to processing, storage, or marketing.

Examples of supported projects

In the Aube, the Ferme des Abbesses received funding for equipment to store, sort, and dry hemp and organic cereals. This led to the development of 370 hectares of farmland, including 53 hectares in water intake areas. In the Oise, Alpha Proteins is working on a project to dry alfalfa using low-temperature technology, supported by a significant grant from the water agency.

Application process and timeline

Those interested in applying for the AMI are advised to contact their local water agency representative first. Applications must be submitted by December 31, 2026. Projects will be reviewed in March 2027, and aid requests will be processed starting in May of the same year.
