The parents of a four-and-a-half-month-old baby who died in January 2021 were sentenced by the High Court of Corsica. The father was given 15 years in prison for violence that resulted in death without intent to kill, while the mother received a five-year sentence, with two years to be served immediately, for failing to report the incidents. The father was also convicted of intentionally harming their son over several weeks before his death. Photos sent to investigators by the baby's grandmother after the death showed bruises on the infant’s face and body between October 2020 and January 2021, which were presented as evidence during the trial. The infant’s death was discovered on January 29, 2021, in Nice. He was taken to the pediatric hospital in the city’s intensive care unit, where he was found to have intracranial hemorrhage and massive cerebral edema. All medical examinations concluded that these injuries were the result of "a human intervention that was not accidental." Experts dated the violence to a time when the father was alone with the baby in their home in Calenzana, a town in High Corsica. Two reports mentioned an episode in which the baby was shaken, while a counter-medical assessment suggested a head injury. The 36-year-old father denied the charges, and his lawyer argued for his acquittal, saying, "I loved my son, I always did what I could," during his closing remarks to the jurors. The mother's defense also requested that she be acquitted. The court ruled that the fixed portion of her sentence should be served immediately, without waiting for a possible appeal. Both parents were free during the trial, which began on Monday. They had been released in 2021 after 23 days of provisional detention, following a procedural error and an administrative mistake by the Bastia Court of Appeal.
