Bar targeted with tear gas

The feminist lesbian bar La Gougnotte was attacked with tear gas by police during a demonstration on October 17, while it was hosting demonstrators seeking refuge. The incident occurred in Toulouse's Saint-Cyprien neighborhood, where the bar is known for offering shelter during local protests due to its location.

Bar’s role in protests

La Gougnotte has long been a refuge for demonstrators in Toulouse, particularly during protests. Its strategic location made it a natural choice for people seeking shelter during recent demonstrations, including after a radical Pride event in 2023. Co-manager Marion Luc described how police dispersed demonstrators on Avenue Étienne Billières and blocked exits, forcing the bar to take in those fleeing the protests.

Tear gas inside the bar

On October 17, the bar itself became a target when police threw a tear gas canister inside around 6 p.m. The canister exploded, trapping those present, including families and children. The incident took place while the bar was open and hosting people, adding to the shock and concern of those inside.

Drag queen’s testimony

Drag queen artist Liv Bellugio described the event as an "attack" in a video for Paint, an LGBTQIA+ media outlet. Earlier in the day, part of the La Gougnotte team, along with friends and supporters, had opened the bar to serve as a shelter and provided first aid using available supplies such as saline solution.

Plans to file a complaint

The bar’s team plans to file a complaint with the ombudsman, seeking to address what they describe as an unjustified use of force. The incident has drawn attention to the role of LGBTQIA+ spaces in protest movements and the risks they face when involved in such events.
