RC Vannes suffers sixth loss

The RC Vannes lost to Perpignan 21-12 in a Top 14 match on Saturday, October 10, marking their sixth defeat in six games this season. Despite showing resilience against the physical demands of the league, the team remains winless in the championship.

Growing gap with rivals

This loss has increased the gap between Vannes and USAP, with the latter now holding a 12-point advantage. The defeat also highlights concerns for Vannes, as they failed to secure a defensive bonus and now trail closely behind Castres Olympique, which has an 8-point lead in the standings.

Recent promotion and challenges

RC Vannes returned to the Top 14 this season after winning the Pro D2 2025-2026 final against Provence Rugby with a score of 18-14. However, the club was relegated at the end of the previous season, making their return to the elite a significant achievement.

Struggle for survival in Top 14

Since 2021, only two teams—USAP and Aviron Bayonnais—have managed to remain in the Top 14. Vannes has faced a tough battle to stay in the top division, winning four of the last five promotion play-offs. The financial gap between Top 14 and Pro D2 clubs has made the competition more intense and the path to promotion more uncertain.

Financial and structural challenges

Top 14 clubs have significantly higher budgets than Pro D2 teams, ranging from 23.5 to 60.8 million euros this season, compared to 6.3 to 19.8 million euros in Pro D2. The new promotion and relegation system has created a divide between the two leagues, making it harder for teams in Pro D2 to secure a direct promotion.

Improvement not enough to avoid relegation

Despite showing signs of improvement in the 2024-2025 season, Vannes collected only 15 points in the first phase and 21 points in the return phase, which was not enough to avoid relegation. However, the team is not yet out of the race, and the upcoming matches could still determine their fate.
