Road signs along Minge Lane in Upton upon Severn, Worcestershire, have been reinforced with concrete to prevent theft by souvenir-hunting tourists. The street, which topped a survey of the UK's most cheekily named locations, is part of a list that includes other unusual names such as Sluts Hole Lane in Norfolk, Sandy Balls in the New Forest, Shitterton in Dorset, and Wetwang in Yorkshire. According to Jeremy Owenson, the mayor of Upton upon Severn, residents embrace the name and hold an annual summer festival in its honor. The street's popularity has led to previous thefts of road signs, prompting the reinforcement. Butthole Lane in Shepshed, Leicestershire, is another road that made the list and has a historic explanation for its name. Peter Grainger, a resident for 46 years, explained that the name dates back to 1066 when a royal decree required archery practice in a hollow referred to as a "butt." Grainger said he would not support changing the name, emphasizing its historical significance. Bell End in Rowley Regis, West Midlands, was the subject of a petition to rename it in 2018 due to concerns over bullying, but the name was not changed after a rival campaign in favor of retaining the historic name received more than 4,800 supporters. A survey by Asda Money found that over half of Britons consider the UK's road and village names to be some of the funniest in the world, but they can also be a distraction for drivers. The survey found that 65 percent of drivers are put off by cheeky road names, with 60 percent admitting to missing turns or exits due to laughing and one in three nearly having an accident. Asda Car Insurance temporarily covered some of the most distracting road signs with "modesty" curtains to help keep drivers focused. The survey ranked the most distracting road names, with Sluts Hole Lane in Norfolk at the top, followed by Butthole Lane in Leicestershire, Bell End in Rowley Regis, Twatt in Orkney, and The Knob in Northamptonshire. Other notable names included Minge Lane in Worcestershire, Sandy Balls in the New Forest, Cock-A-Dibby in Berkshire, and others.
