French health industry proposes German model

The French health industry is suggesting adopting the German model to speed up access to new treatments. This proposal, announced by G5 Santé—a group of major French health industry leaders—aims to allow health products to be immediately available after European approval, without waiting for price negotiations.

German system allows immediate access

In Germany, price negotiations and reimbursement discussions happen at the same time, allowing patients to start treatment right away. Products are initially sold at the manufacturer's set price and fully reimbursed for six months, with later reviews to adjust the reimbursement rate and price.

G5 wants to change evaluation approach

The G5 group wants to shift the evaluation philosophy to accept more uncertainty so patients can access new treatments as quickly as possible. They argue that current French procedures delay access to innovative medicines compared to other European countries.

French system delays access to treatments

French industry leaders often criticize the long delays between a product's approval and its reimbursement by the Health Insurance. In France, a product must first be evaluated by the High Authority for Health and then its price negotiated, unlike in Germany where access is faster.

Germany leads in medicine accessibility

According to the Leem union, 93% of new medicines are accessible in Germany, compared to only 60% in France. The G5 is pushing for changes to close this gap, emphasizing the need for faster patient access to innovative treatments.
