The Women’s Super League (WSL) in England is set to begin a new season with the expansion to 14 teams, adding three new clubs to the competition. This summer has brought major changes, including high-profile player transfers, a restructured League Cup, and a new team on top of the WSL trophy. For the first time in six years, players have had a proper summer break without major international tournaments, following the postponements of the Tokyo Olympics, European Championship, and others. This has given managers the chance to prepare fully for the season with all their players, something that hasn’t happened in over five years. The race for the title is wide open, with Manchester City as the defending champions. The team has a strong, settled squad and a powerful attack led by Bunny Shaw, who has won three consecutive Golden Boot awards. However, Manchester City will have a challenging season as they aim to defend both their league and FA Cup titles while also competing in the Champions League. Last season, they avoided Champions League football by finishing fourth in the league, but now they must balance multiple competitions. Several teams have made significant changes to their squads. Arsenal has brought in younger players and added experienced names like Georgia Stanway and Géraldine Reuteler. Chelsea has also restructured after a transitional season, losing several key players. Meanwhile, Manchester United, despite finishing nine points behind Chelsea last season, may struggle this year due to limited financial support and a weak transfer window. Their new manager, Eva Olid, has previous success in leading a team from the bottom of a league to the top, but it remains to be seen if the new recruits can help them compete. Tottenham and Brighton are also looking to make their mark. Tottenham has signed players like Kirsty Hanson, while Brighton has added Arturo Ruiz as a young replacement for their former manager. Everton, Liverpool, and West Ham may also surprise with their strong transfer activity. Aston Villa has recruited 10 new players to replace nine who left, but concerns remain about replacing key figures like Gabi Nunes. Among the new teams in the WSL, Birmingham and Crystal Palace have brought in top talent to avoid relegation, while Charlton has added eight new players to help manager Karen Hills. With the expanded league, the season promises to be full of surprises.
