Multiple U.S. military aircraft were damaged in Iranian strikes on the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan during the early hours of Wednesday local time. The attack reportedly struck one A-10 Thunderbolt, a heavily armored attack aircraft known as the Warthog, which lost a wing. Around eight F-15 fighter jets sustained light damage but were reportedly returned to service. No U.S. personnel were reported killed in the incident. This attack followed a U.S. strike on five Iranian oil tankers earlier in the day, which the United States claimed was in response to Iran targeting a U.S. Navy warship. In turn, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated it launched attacks on eight tankers and two warships, including the Jordanian base. In defense of the base, U.S. forces in Jordan deployed more than 30 Patriot missiles to intercept the incoming Iranian projectiles. The use of these missiles has raised concerns among U.S. officials about the rapidly dwindling supply of such defensive weapons and other precision munitions. This situation has heightened the urgency for replenishment and strategic planning in the region. President Donald Trump commented on the conflict during a press briefing on Wednesday, suggesting that Iran is trying to influence the upcoming midterm elections. He claimed that the war would end immediately after the elections because, he said, Iran cannot sustain the conflict much longer. Trump added that Iran's goal is to gain a nuclear weapon, which he warned would pose a serious threat to global security if achieved. However, he also stated that he is not seeking to negotiate with Iran in the near future, before the midterms. "We're not looking for it, to be honest," Trump said, indicating that negotiations are not currently on the table despite previous discussions. The ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Iran have escalated with each retaliatory strike, highlighting the fragile nature of the current geopolitical landscape. Both nations continue to assert their positions, with the U.S. emphasizing its military readiness and Iran focusing on its strategic objectives in the region.
