Thomas Tuchel, the England men's team manager, has issued a clear message to young players Kobbie Mainoo and Cole Palmer, warning them that missing international training camps could jeopardize their positions in future squads. Palmer, who was not selected for the World Cup squad in the summer, and Mainoo, who didn’t play a single minute in the tournament, were both included in the recent extended international break squad for matches against Spain, the Czech Republic, and Croatia. However, both players withdrew earlier in the week, prompting Tuchel to emphasize the importance of consistent presence in the camp. Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Tuchel stressed that players not in the squad risk falling behind in the selection process. He wants to see "top level performances" from those in camp before deciding who gets game time. "The players know very well that if you miss a camp and there is someone else good in your position, the competition will always be on," Tuchel said. He also clarified that his focus is solely on the players present, adding that there is no "threat" or "distrust" among the squad. Cole Palmer has been dealing with a chronic groin injury since last season, though he has remained a regular for Chelsea this season, playing 90 minutes in four of their five Premier League games. Tuchel explained that Palmer’s recent absence was due to "discomfort and pain" preventing him from performing at the highest level, rather than a new injury. Palmer last played for England in a 1-0 loss to Japan in March, where competition for attacking roles has intensified. Tuchel acknowledged that this international break represented another missed opportunity for Palmer, who has been absent from several camps due to injuries. While he does not blame Palmer for these absences, Tuchel emphasized that consistent presence in camp is essential for selection. "If not, there is a next level you cannot achieve—you can only do it if you are with us on the pitch," he said, reinforcing the need for players to be physically and mentally present to remain in contention for international games.
