Lyon starts restoration of Théâtre des Célestins

The City of Lyon has begun a major restoration project for the Théâtre des Célestins, a historic theater, starting on October 19. The initiative includes repairing the roof, windows, and parts of the building’s exterior.

Restoration includes roof and historical materials

The restoration will focus on the roof, originally built by architect Gaspard André between 1880 and 1881. Glazed tiles and copper coverings will be restored, and the central part, currently covered with zinc, will be replaced with copper to match the building's historical design.

Window frames and building performance improvements

Approximately 130 exterior window frames will be restored or repaired. The project also aims to improve the theater’s waterproofing and thermal performance, ensuring the building remains functional and energy-efficient.

Facades and accessibility upgrades planned

Interventions will address cracks on the facades and the northern balcony. Handrails will be added to the central staircase to improve accessibility for visitors, maintaining the theater’s usability while preserving its historical character.

Project timeline and ongoing operations

The restoration will be carried out in three phases and is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2029. Despite the work, the theater will continue hosting performances and cultural events, with access remaining open and secure for visitors.
