SteamVR is a platform that lets users play virtual reality (VR) games through the Steam platform, provided they have compatible hardware. It offers an immersive experience where users can interact with digital environments using VR headsets and controllers. Recently, Valve, the company behind Steam, introduced its own Steam Frame VR headset priced at $1000. To manage demand and prevent resale at inflated prices, the headset is being released through a reservation lottery system. Those who prefer not to wait can use other VR headsets, including models from Valve, HTC, Meta (formerly Oculus), and PICO. To get started with SteamVR, users need a Steam account. They can search for SteamVR within the Steam client and install it at no cost. After installation, they must connect their VR headset, controllers, and any necessary sensors to their PC. For wireless setups, the Steam Link app supports several headsets, including Meta Quest models and HTC Vive Focus, allowing users to stream VR content from their PC to their headset. For users new to VR, some setup steps may be required to ensure SteamVR functions properly. The system will guide users in selecting between Room-Scale or Standing Only settings. Room-Scale mode requires a clear space of around 6.5 by 5 feet, while Standing Only allows for a more limited movement range. The Chaperone system can be activated in the Play Area settings to help users avoid bumping into real-world objects while in VR. SteamVR Home acts as a virtual space where users can interact with friends using digital avatars and personalize their environment with items purchased on Steam or earned through achievements. The SteamVR dashboard, accessible via the controller’s menu or system button, lets users browse VR games, adjust settings, and even access their computer desktop in virtual reality. Additional settings like Motion Smoothing and Controller Bindings can be customized through the settings menu, which is available via the cog icon in the dashboard or the Desktop button.
