Spanish publishing giant Grupo Planeta is preparing to return to the French book market with the launch of Editions Planeta, a new publishing house based in Paris. The venture is led by Claire Do Sêrro, who was previously the executive editorial director at Robert Laffont and has worked with authors such as Margaret Atwood, Bret Easton Ellis, and Jennifer Egan. The first books from Editions Planeta are expected to arrive in bookstores in August 2027 for the literary season, with Dilisco handling distribution. This marks a return to France for Grupo Planeta, which had acquired Editis in 2008 but sold it to Vivendi in 2019. Unlike its previous acquisition of an established player, this time the Spanish group is creating a new publishing house from scratch. Grupo Planeta currently oversees more than 70 editorial brands and publishes over 2,500 new titles annually in Spanish, Catalan, and Portuguese. The group has not entirely left France, as it maintains a presence through Planeta Formación y Universidades, which operates five higher education institutions in Paris. Grupo Planeta's audiovisual activities remain primarily focused in Spain, where it is a key shareholder in Atresmedia, owner of Antena 3, La Sexta, and Onda Cero. Claire Do Sêrro will be responsible for building the editorial program and catalog for Editions Planeta. She has previously worked at Éditions du Sous-Sol and NiL, where she helped revive the house. Among the authors she has worked with is Alia Trabucco Zerán, whose book Propre won the 2024 Femina foreign prize. Jesús Badenes, general director of the editorial division of Grupo Planeta, stated that the group aims to create a "sustainable" project in France, capable of creating value for authors, readers, and bookstores. The success of Editions Planeta will depend on the authors and genres it chooses to focus on, with the 2027 literary season program expected to provide more details.
