The Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season is now in its fourth week, and managers are beginning to make key strategic decisions, such as using a Free Hit or Wildcard to maximize points. BBC Sport FPL expert Holly Shand highlights the choices facing managers as they look to optimize their squads. Chelsea striker Joao Pedro, priced at £7.7m, remains the most-owned player, appearing in 72.5% of all FPL teams. With Chelsea already scoring eight goals this season and facing promoted Hull City at home next, some managers may consider doubling up on their existing Chelsea players. Cole Palmer (£9.6m) and Morgan Rogers (£7.6m) both made impressive half-time substitutes in the Carabao Cup against Leeds United, with Palmer scoring twice, including a penalty, and Rogers contributing three assists. If budget allows, Palmer’s goal threat and penalty expertise make him a strong option. A triple-up on Chelsea attackers could be viable with a wildcard, but it would require each player to score at least two goals per game. For gameweek four, Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo (£7.3m) is the most-bought player, with over 500,000 new owners selecting him for his home game against Fulham. However, Gakpo is now doubtful for the match due to an adductor injury. Alexander Isak (£9.1m), who has scored three goals in his last two games, is the second-highest scoring forward but comes with a high price tag, making him difficult to acquire. Gakpo, on the other hand, has assisted all of his goals, making him a strong pick despite his injury concerns. Looking at Manchester United, there is optimism ahead of their upcoming clash with Manchester City at Old Trafford. Manager Michael Carrick’s first league game in charge ended in a 2-0 victory, with Bryan Mbeumo (£7.9m) scoring and Bruno Fernandes (£12m) providing an assist. Fernandes leads all players in shots taken with 15, while Mbeumo has created the most big chances of any midfielder, with four. Both players are seen as long-term holds in FPL squads. For wildcard selections, the Arsenal defense has performed strongly, recording two clean sheets and conceding only one goal so far. Ezri Konsa (£4.4m) is a budget-friendly option in defense, while double-ups could include David Raya (£6m), Gabriel (£8m), or Riccardo Calafiori (£5.7m). Chelsea attackers like Joao Pedro and Erling Haaland (£15.5m) from Manchester City are also under consideration. Midfielder Pascal Gross (£5.6m) offers a cheaper alternative for those looking to strengthen their midfield. For gameweek four captaincy, Cole Palmer is a top choice due to his penalty duties and nine shots in the box. If he is unavailable, managers without him might consider Morgan Rogers or Joao Pedro. Haaland, who is playing away at Manchester United, has scored five goals in his last three competitive matches and remains a high-risk, high-reward option. Leeds striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£6m) has underperformed so far, scoring only once in three gameweeks, but he has potential with upcoming home games. He scored from the bench in the Carabao Cup, and other budget picks like Yoanne Wissa (£6.2m) and Thierno Barry (£5.6m) are also gaining attention. Meanwhile, Brighton’s Maxime de Cuyper (£4.8m) started the season as a winger, scoring one goal and providing two assists. However, he may be shifted back to full-back when Kaoru Mitoma returns from injury. While de Cuyper was a strong pick in gameweek one, Arsenal’s Konsa is now the preferred choice at this price point.
