13-year-old Sven Langel dominates U15 biathlon and cross-country skiing events, but now faces a tough choice between cycling and winter sports.
Young athlete dominates national events
Sven Langel, a 13-year-old biathlete and cross-country skier, won the 2026 U15 national summer biathlon and cross-country skiing competitions. These events took place in Vassieux-en-Vercors in the Drôme region and Prémanon in the Jura region, where he claimed victory in both overall standings and four individual events.Langel's progress and challenges
Langel said he began to improve in biathlon by focusing on shooting accuracy and endurance, though he acknowledged his performance was still inconsistent. He also noted that he quickly realized he was excelling in the skiing portions of the competition. His father, Arnaud Langel, a former junior world champion in the relay in 2006, helped adjust his rifle to better fit his body.Cycling success and its impact
Langel is also a strong cyclist, having trained extensively on two wheels during the summer. He won the European U14 cyclo-cross championship last year and secured the French Road Trophy last season. His father explained that his cycling training contributed to his success in biathlon and cross-country skiing.Focus shifts to cyclo-cross season
Langel has set aside his skis and rifle to concentrate fully on his cyclo-cross season. His father mentioned they have not yet decided whether to compete in the European cyclo-cross championships on November 15 in Romania, as the event is fully funded by them for these age categories. He added that it would be a shame not to participate, given Langel's current performance level.Future decision looms
Langel said he will soon have to choose between cycling and biathlon/cross-country skiing. He admitted it would be difficult to maintain both disciplines simultaneously, though he noted his decision is "a bit made" and could still change.
