The family of Celeste Rivas Hernandez is urging that singer D4vd, whose real name is David Anthony Burke, face the death penalty after a Los Angeles judge ordered him to stand trial for the murder of the 14-year-old girl. Her dismembered remains were discovered in September 2025 inside the trunk of a Tesla at a Los Angeles impound lot. According to prosecutors, the car had been abandoned on a street near Burke’s home and was later towed by Hollywood Tow. Court documents state that a decomposed head and torso were found in a black cadaver bag, and another bag contained additional dismembered body parts. The family released a statement on what would have been Celeste’s 16th birthday, expressing their belief that the death penalty would be an appropriate punishment for Burke. They described him as "devoid of feelings and emptiness inside, and without conscience, who only caused pain to our daughter, our family, and the world that supports our precious daughter." The family also shared that they were "experiencing so many emotions" and "reliving unforgettable moments even though she is no longer here." They emphasized that these feelings are shared only by a parent and siblings, and that they will always cherish the memories they had with Celeste, whom they called "Celestita." Burke, 21, was arrested in April at a home on Marmont Avenue in the Hollywood Hills, according to Los Angeles police. He has pleaded not guilty to charges including murder, continuous sexual abuse of a child under the age of 14, and unlawful mutilation of human remains. During an evidentiary hearing in July, prosecutors stated that Burke began a relationship with Rivas Hernandez when she was 13 and ended it after she threatened to expose him. Text messages presented in court revealed that the teen had become pregnant by Burke and had an abortion. Last month, Burke abruptly ended his relationship with his legal team and requested to be represented by public defenders. An attorney for Rivas Hernandez’s family criticized this decision, stating that Burke, who is a social media millionaire, does not deserve a public defender. "The residents of Los Angeles County should be outraged because it will be the taxpayers that are picking up the tab to defend this millionaire," attorney Patrick Steinfeld said. He added that "David Anthony Burke is not indigent." An attorney for the singer did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
