U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin has asked President Donald Trump to bring up concerns about China’s potential role in a July attack on a Jordanian military base during his upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The attack, which killed three U.S. soldiers and injured four others, reportedly involved satellite imagery that may have been provided by Chinese companies to Iran. Slotkin sent a letter to Trump, obtained by CBS News, urging him to make this issue a central topic of discussion during Xi’s scheduled visit to the White House on September 24. The letter cited a recent report by the Wall Street Journal, which suggested that U.S. officials believe Iran used satellite images from Chinese firms both before and after the attack. Slotkin pointed out that the Trump administration had already imposed sanctions on three Chinese satellite companies—Meentropy Technology, The Earth Eye, and Chang Guang Satellite Technology—for supplying imagery that allegedly helps Iran conduct military strikes against U.S. forces in the Middle East. She argued that the recent reports indicate that China’s support may have directly led to the deaths of American service members. This would be a significant escalation of concerns about China’s involvement in regional security issues. When asked if he would raise the issue with Xi, Trump responded that he believed China “has behaved reasonably well.” He has previously made similar remarks about Xi, noting that China “basically do what we do” when it comes to intelligence activities. The July attack targeted housing at the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in northeast Jordan, killing Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, 1st Lt. Tyler James Feehan, and Sgt. Angel S. Rampersad. Trump is set to host Xi at the White House for a summit and state dinner, marking the second time this year the two leaders will meet in person, following their meeting in Beijing in May. Xi last visited the White House in 2015. Slotkin criticized Trump’s approach, saying his “insistence on rolling out the red carpet for our adversaries and kicking our allies in the teeth is beyond me.” She urged Trump to clearly communicate to Xi that China’s support for Iran must end immediately and that the U.S. will take consequences if China fails to act. The White House has not yet responded to Slotkin’s letter.
