In October, French dairy producers raised their base price for milk by 2 to 8 euros per 1,000 liters. Despite this increase, they still offer the lowest prices on the market. In August, five small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) were the top performers in both monthly and annual pricing. These SMEs dominated the French monthly price rankings for August deliveries, far outpacing large dairy companies such as Lactalis, Sodiaal, Eurial, and Savencia. Mont Blanc, Pâturages comtois, Milleret, and Novandie held the top five positions mainly because of their base prices, which ranged from 460 to 477 euros per 1,000 liters. Triballat-Rians had a slightly lower base price of 435 euros, but its producers received a bonus that increased the monthly price. In contrast, the large industrial leaders offered the lowest prices.
Producers in Brittany and Loire who supply Lactalis, Sodiaal, and Savencia (OP Lait Baie & Bocages, ex-Ouest’Lait) are the most affected by this pricing structure. These producers have lower base prices (400 euros for the first two, and 406.20 euros for the last) and historically receive fewer company bonuses compared to producers in other regions. These industrial leaders have been dealing with a difficult market for powdered butter for over a year, and the price gap between the top five companies and them remains between 60 and 80 euros per 1,000 liters. The five companies that led in monthly prices also led in annual average prices for the 12 months ending in August.
Mont Blanc, which is a subsidiary of Bel, was the top performer in both monthly and annual rankings. Three other companies—Avesnois Lait marketing GIE and the Laitnaa collection cooperative—had base prices below 400 euros (365 euros and 385 euros, respectively). Sill, with a base price of 0.48 euros per 1,000 liters, had a monthly price for August that matched Sodiaal’s. In the lower part of the rankings, the Côte-d'Or Dairy Cooperative, which supplies Eurial Lait, had a base price of 404.68 euros (excluding a tank bonus). This is because it does not receive a 5 euro harmonization bonus with Lower Normandy, which is available to members of Eurial in Brittany-Pays de la Loire.
The same harmonization bonus is under review by the Unell OP Association. In mid-June, representatives of Lactalis suppliers filed a complaint with the agricultural trade relations mediator, disagreeing with the October base price of 408.27 euros per 1,000 liters (Unell-Lactalis France). This price had increased by 8.27 euros compared to August and September. "We are asking that Lactalis be in its market," they stated at an event in Rennes in September. Eurial-Agrial announced a base price of 407 euros in October and 412 euros in November in Brittany-Pays de la Loire (excluding the harmonization bonus), compared to 404.38 euros since May. This confirms what Pascal Le Brun, president of Eurial, stated at the Space: "At least 410 euros per 1,000 liters of base price in the fourth quarter. The year 2027 is expected to have price increases," he added, while noting the geopolitical uncertainties and the challenge of getting retailers to recognize the additional costs of breeders and processors.
In response, the Federation of Trade and Distribution asked the industrialists for "more transparency." Sodiaal increased its October price to 405 euros, compared to 400 euros since April. Meanwhile, Who is the Boss?, a brand representing historical producers, has been included in The Dairy Farmer's observatory of "non-GMO" milk prices, which includes ten dairies. Collected and processed by the Saint-Denis-de-l'Hôtel Dairy, these producers sell 93.4% of their milk under this brand. As expected, they led in the payment for August deliveries, as well as in the annual average with 558.47 euros and 560.05 euros.
