Dakar 2026, the first Olympic event in history to be held on the African continent, will be hosted by Senegal's capital, with the French department of Seine-Saint-Denis playing a key role in its preparation. Since 2023, Seine-Saint-Denis has shared its experience from the upcoming Paris 2024 Games, especially in the design and management of celebration sites, with Dakar. A first project, co-financed by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Senegalese Ministry of Territorial Collectivities between 2024 and 2025, allowed the training of 80 young technicians in event-related professions with the Maison des Cultures urbaines de Dakar, and sent an international solidarity volunteer for twelve months to the city. A second project, carried out with the City of Paris and Grand Paris Sud, continued this collaboration. The Department of Seine-Saint-Denis also funded twelve mobility projects that will take about 100 young people from the territory to Dakar. At J-30, gathered in Saint-Denis on September 30, Stéphane Troussel, president of the Department, detailed for Sport Stratégies what this cooperation has produced, what it should leave to the two territories, and what the Youth Olympic Games can inspire for future major sporting events. Dakar is ready to host the event, with infrastructures built or renovated for the occasion and a finalized sports and cultural program to allow everyone to participate in this great Olympic celebration. The greatest challenge is certainly that of impatience: after years of organizing everything, everyone is eager for this great sporting celebration, which is also a historic event in Dakar and on the African continent. The cooperation between Dakar and Seine-Saint-Denis began in 2023, and a first project co-financed by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Senegalese Ministry of Territorial Collectivities between 2024 and 2025 allowed the municipal teams to support the organization of the Youth Olympic Games through several exchanges and sharing of expertise, particularly on the organization and management of celebration sites, based on the experience of Seine-Saint-Denis during the Paris 2024 Games and the success of the Parc des Jeux. This cooperation also contributed to the training of 80 young technicians in event-related professions, in partnership with the Maison des Cultures urbaines de Dakar, a key partner in the cooperation. A second project, co-led with the City of Paris and Grand Paris Sud, allowed these actions to continue. Furthermore, thanks to funding from France Volontaires, a volunteer on an International Solidarity Volunteer mission was deployed for a period of 12 months with the city of Dakar and the Maison des Cultures Urbaines. The Department funded 12 mobility projects through a call for projects or through direct funding to associations and cities. This represents about 100 young people from Seine-Saint-Denis who have committed to building their mobility projects. These international mobilities are part of the history of Seine-Saint-Denis, which is a territory open to the world and proud of the diversity of identities, cultures, and stories that meet and mix there. It is this that makes it a dynamic, popular, creative, and solidarity-based territory. It is this richness and pride that we wish to pass on to the young people by giving them the opportunity to be their representatives, alongside Tiakola, an artist from La Courneuve and proud ambassador of the Seine-Saint-Denis Department for these Youth Olympic Games. Beyond representing Seine-Saint-Denis, these mobilities constitute a unique opportunity for these young people to open up to the world during an unprecedented event on the African continent, giving them the opportunity to build their mobility projects with associations and entrepreneurs. This experience is a richness that will accompany them throughout their lives.
