French singer Lio recently criticized actress Mimie Mathy for her public comments in favor of Patrick Bruel, a French actor and singer who has faced multiple allegations of sexual misconduct. Mathy made her remarks in an interview with Le Parisien on September 3, where she suggested that mayors who had opposed Bruel’s concerts should have allowed the public to decide whether to attend. She described the situation as a “strange form of execution,” implying that the backlash against Bruel was excessive. Lio addressed Mathy’s comments during a segment on France 5’s popular music show C dans l'air on Friday evening. She accused Mathy of lacking empathy for the victims of Bruel’s alleged misconduct, criticizing her for not acknowledging the pain of those affected. Lio also expressed disappointment that Bruel remains in “total denial” despite 32 formal complaints having been filed against him. In addition to commenting on Mathy’s remarks, Lio referenced a controversial Instagram post by actress Flavie Flament, which she described as “The slap.” The post was made in response to a recent judicial decision that reduced the level of control courts have over certain cases. Lio used the post to highlight what she sees as a broader issue of insufficient legal action against perpetrators of violence. Lio also pointed out that despite significant public mobilization following the rape and murder of 14-year-old Lyhanna in 2021, the issue of violence against children has not generated the same level of urgency or response as other societal concerns. She emphasized that sexual violence against women and children are deeply connected and require unified attention and action.
