A woman was injured in Paulton, Somerset, after trying to stop a shoplifter fleeing from a Co-op supermarket. Hailey Bush, a mother of two, was dragged under the wheel of a car as she attempted to prevent the offender from escaping. The incident occurred when Bush went to the store for milk and a staff member drew her attention to a woman taking items from the shelves without paying. Moments later, the staff member yelled, "No, stop," and Bush saw the woman run out of the store with a basket of goods. Bush chased after the woman and called out, offering to pay for the items if the shoplifter was struggling. The woman reportedly replied, "I've got to get to my partner," and rushed toward a parked car. As Bush grabbed the basket, she heard the woman tell the driver to "drive." The man behind the wheel reversed and dragged Bush onto the ground, with her leg caught under the front wheel. After shouting for the driver to stop, the vehicle moved forward and left the car park with the shoplifter in the passenger seat. Bush described the experience as shocking, saying she walked around in disbelief before breaking down in tears. She was fortunate to escape with only bruising to her leg. In recent years, shoplifting has reached a near-decade high in England and Wales, with nearly 50,000 cases brought to court in 2022. The average prison sentence for such crimes was 2.4 months. Retailers are losing an estimated £2.2 billion annually due to theft, prompting many to take measures like removing display cabinets or marking items with forensic spray to deter thieves. Avon and Somerset Police have released images of two individuals they want to speak to in connection with the incident, which took place on 3 September. The police said an unknown woman left the Co-op store with a basket of items she had not paid for between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. A woman in her 30s tried to intervene and was involved in a collision with a black Vauxhall Combo van. The woman suffered minor injuries and did not require hospital treatment. The first person police are looking for is a white woman with long black hair, wearing a green dress and a grey fleece. The second is a white man with short hair, wearing blue jeans and a grey hooded jumper.
