Middle East conflict threatens World Cup plans

The ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran has raised concerns about the feasibility of hosting the 2027 World Cup in Qatar. The geopolitical tensions could disrupt the event's organization, prompting discussions about alternative host countries.

Qatar's World Cup schedule and location

The 2027 World Cup is set to take place from August 27 to September 12 in four venues in the Doha region. Qatar was officially selected in April 2023 by the International Federation of Basketball (FIBA) to host the tournament. However, the region's stability has been challenged by military actions involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran.

Impact of the military operation

A large-scale joint military operation by the United States and Israel against Iran, which began on February 28, 2026, has had ripple effects across the Middle East. Qatar, being less than 200 km from Iran across the Persian Gulf, is particularly vulnerable to regional instability. As a result, FIBA has already postponed several qualification matches in the area.

FIBA's continued efforts

Despite the challenges, FIBA's general secretary, Andreas Zagklis, stated that the organizing committee has "not stopped working for a single day." The organization has also made it clear that it is prepared to take action if the situation in Qatar becomes untenable.

Germany's potential involvement

According to the German magazine BIG, in its "Dirty Screens" column, FIBA might be forced to find a new host for the World Cup. The German Basketball Federation (DBB) is reportedly considering hosting the event, with potential cities including Berlin, Cologne, Hamburg, and Munich. Germany's existing infrastructure and experience in hosting major events, such as the 2026 Women's World Cup in Berlin, support this possibility.

Challenges of switching hosts

Switching the host country would involve significant logistical challenges, including preparing new venues, reserving accommodations for the 32 participating teams, and restructuring ticketing and partnerships. These steps would require substantial time and resources.

France's possible support

BIG also suggests that France, which has been awarded the 2031 World Cup, might assist Germany in organizing the 2027 event. However, this information should be considered with caution, as it is not officially confirmed.
