A Canadian couple transformed a retired school bus into a fully functional mobile home, allowing them to travel sustainably across North America.
Home on wheels project begins
In 2021, Tanya Nestoruk and Arya Touserkani sold their four-bedroom house in Canada to buy an old school bus for 6,432 euros. They wanted to move away from traditional housing and live a more mobile lifestyle.Choosing the right vehicle
After living in a converted van, the couple found it too small and uncomfortable. They discovered an old school bus listed on Facebook Marketplace by a school transporter. The bus had been used for school transportation but was in good condition and offered more space than their van.Renovation goals and challenges
The couple planned to convert the school bus into a fully functional home on wheels, allowing them to travel while staying comfortable and reducing their environmental impact. Tanya said the project was about adventure and giving a second life to a retired vehicle. The renovation, which was expected to take six months, ended up taking a year and cost an additional 26,803 euros.Features of the mobile home
The renovated school bus includes a living room with a custom sofa bed, a bedroom with a king-size bed, a kitchen with a three-burner stove, oven, and storage, an independent bathroom, a washing machine, a dishwasher, and solar panels on the roof. It also has an external staircase to the roof and a motorcycle rack for their main transportation.Traveling with their new home
The couple has used the school bus as their mobile home to make several round trips between Canada and Mexico, demonstrating how the project has allowed them to live a flexible and adventurous lifestyle.
