France updates ecoscore rules for EVs, introducing new categories and affecting subsidies and tax benefits.
Ecoscore calculation revised
A decree published in the official journal on October 23, 2026, revises the calculation method of the ecoscore, a French program that determines eligibility for subsidies and financial assistance for electric vehicles based on their environmental impact.Ecoscore background
The ecoscore, established in 2023, considers the carbon footprint of a vehicle before its release, including the extraction of raw materials, the production of the battery, the assembly of the car, and the transport of the finished vehicle from its factory to its delivery location in France.Three new categories
The revised calculation method introduces three categories instead of the previous two. Category 1 includes electric vehicles offering seven seats or more, 700 liters of boot space, or an autonomy of more than 380 km in the WLTP cycle. For these vehicles, the calculation method remains the same as it has been since 2023.Category 2 details
Category 2 includes compact electric models that do not meet the conditions of category 1 and have five or more seating places, a boot volume of more than 200 liters, and an electric autonomy of more than 250 km. The allowed carbon footprint ceilings for these models are reduced by 1,700 kg of CO2.Category 3 defined
Category 3 includes compact and city models that do not meet the criteria of the first two categories.New ecoscore list
The new ecoscore list, which will come into effect on November 24, 2026, has a limited impact compared to the previous list. The only model missing from the new list is the Mazda MX-30. Some versions of a model may no longer be eligible, but the entire range of flagship models assembled in Europe retains its eligibility.New models added
New models entering the program include the Audi A2, the Leapmotor B10 now produced in Europe, and the Lancia Gamma.Delivery deadlines
For models and versions that are no longer listed and whose orders are signed before November 24, manufacturers will have until February 6, 2027 to deliver them.Ecoscore importance
Obtaining the ecoscore is a prerequisite for various financial assistance programs for purchase or rental, as well as certain tax benefits. For individuals, this opens access to Coup de pouce CEE, the ecological bonus, and potentially to social leasing. Companies are also affected, as the ecoscore grants a 70% reduction on in-kind benefits.
