YouTube has introduced a new feature for its Premium subscribers, allowing them to download videos for offline viewing. Previously, this functionality was only available on mobile devices, but now users can access it across multiple platforms, including desktop computers. To download a video, users need to click the three dots next to the Like, Dislike, and Share buttons and select the Download option. Once downloaded, videos are stored in a dedicated Downloads section within the user's YouTube account, which can be accessed via the left menu on desktop or at the bottom of the Library section on mobile devices. It's important to note that downloaded videos can only be viewed within the YouTube app and cannot be transferred to other devices or edited outside the application. Additionally, downloads are not synchronized across devices, meaning that if a user downloads a video on their phone, it will not automatically appear on their desktop, even if both devices are logged into the same account. This feature was briefly tested in 2018, but a cross-device sync option was never officially launched. Downloaded videos remain accessible offline for 29 days. After this period, users must reconnect to the internet to reset the timer and continue viewing the content offline. This means that if a user doesn't maintain an active internet connection, they risk losing access to their downloaded videos. Furthermore, according to YouTube's Terms of Service, users are not allowed to download videos without permission from the rights holder, YouTube, or applicable laws. While some third-party websites claim to allow users to download YouTube videos by entering a video link, many of these sites are linked to adware and spyware. Some donation-based sites have been shut down by Google, and the remaining ones are generally considered unreliable and unsafe. Although the new YouTube Premium download feature offers convenience for offline viewing, it lacks the flexibility needed by users who want to edit or transfer videos outside of the YouTube app.
