According to a report from TechCrunch, Google is currently testing a new feature in India that allows a small group of users to make direct purchases of products from Flipkart, an Indian e-commerce company owned by Walmart, through its AI-powered tools Gemini and "AI Mode." During the test, users see a "Buy" button on select Flipkart products displayed in these AI interfaces. When clicked, the button takes users directly to Flipkart's payment process without requiring them to leave the AI interface. This test is currently limited to a small number of users and specific products, such as smartphones, electronic devices, and mobile accessories. Users who are not participating in the test can still view Flipkart products within the AI interface but cannot make direct purchases. Google plans to expand the feature by the end of October, possibly in time for India's holiday shopping season. However, the exact details of this expansion have not been confirmed. This trial is part of a growing trend in the AI industry to integrate purchasing capabilities directly into AI systems, moving beyond traditional roles like search and recommendations. Other companies are also exploring similar features. For example, OpenAI, the company behind the ChatGPT chatbot, is developing tools that allow AI to assist users throughout the entire purchasing process. However, at this stage, direct purchasing from the AI interface is not available for all retailers. For instance, while Amazon appears in search results, it does not have an integrated purchase option in Google's AI tools. This initiative builds on Google's previous efforts in the area of AI-driven commerce. Google previously launched the "Universal Commerce Protocol," a system designed to enable AI-powered purchases from multiple retailers. Additionally, Google holds a $350 million investment in Flipkart, indicating a strategic interest in the Indian e-commerce market. The success of this test could influence how AI interfaces are used in the future, potentially changing how users interact with online shopping platforms.
