Angela initiative provides safe spaces for those in danger

The Angela initiative, launched in Alès in 2023, aims to create safe spaces for people who feel threatened or harassed. The program allows individuals to discreetly seek help by simply saying the word "Angela" in a participating business or public place.

Training session for merchants and officials

This Thursday, a training session was held for merchants and representatives from several municipalities, including Saint-Jean-du-Gard, La Grand'Combe, and Cruviers-Lascours. The session aimed to improve their understanding of the initiative and the procedures they should follow in an emergency.

Inspired by a UK model

The Angela initiative is modeled after a similar program introduced in England in 2017. It operates on the principle that a person in danger can enter a partner establishment and signal their need for help without revealing their situation immediately in public.

Growing network of safe locations

Currently, the initiative has 123 partner locations across 14 communes in the Alès area. These include businesses, libraries, town halls, and public facilities, all of which can serve as temporary safe spaces for individuals in distress.

Training and awareness efforts

About 125 municipal staff have been trained to support victims, and over 12,000 informational flyers have been distributed. The training sessions aim to ensure that staff and employees understand the procedures and are prepared to respond effectively in emergencies.

Focus on empathy and guidance

Social workers and officials emphasized that the role of Angela partners is not to conduct investigations or replace the police. Instead, they are to provide a safe environment, show empathy, and guide individuals to the appropriate professionals for further assistance.

Importance of proper procedures

Participants were reminded not to blame the victim, minimize their experience, or ask intrusive questions. The goal is to provide shelter without putting staff or merchants at risk, and in cases of immediate danger, calling emergency services remains the priority.

Expanding the initiative

The organizers now aim to expand the initiative further and improve communication about the network. The effectiveness of the program depends not only on the number of partner locations but also on the ability of individuals to respond appropriately in times of distress.
