DeepSeek's new programming agent

DeepSeek, a Chinese company, has created a prototype programming agent that monitors discussions among developers and automatically submits bug fixes to GitHub without needing explicit requests.

The agent's design and features

The agent, called the Super-agent, hides multiple sessions behind a single interface, allowing developers to interact with it through messaging and GitHub. It only acts when authorized or when a task is requested, and it limits each response to 100 words.

Installation and open-source access

The Super-agent is installed in the Harness platform and distributed as open source under the MIT license. It can be connected to a GitHub repository and optionally to Feishu, ByteDance’s professional messaging platform.

How the agent operates

Once connected, the agent waits for an authorized team member to assign it a task. It processes the task in a separate session and responds in the original conversation, for example by submitting a pull request. Developers can review files requiring their attention on a web dashboard.

Performance and testing

DeepSeek's tests showed that the Super-agent significantly reduced waiting times. Engineers simulated group messaging and GitHub notifications with about 300 messages and found that the agent completed tasks faster than a single agent handling all requests.

Technical architecture and limitations

The agent uses a "router" session to read messages and respond to humans, then launches a "worker" session for each task. These sessions are isolated, and new messages go directly to the relevant session. However, the agent consumes more computational resources, and these results are based on synthetic loads in a simplified environment.

Security concerns and future plans

Hackers who gain access to the agent's servers or manipulate it through prompt injection could potentially control connected devices. DeepSeek engineers are still searching for a way to use developers' credentials securely. The code is a research prototype and may still contain bugs.

Installation and usage

To install the agent, developers are advised to ask a programming agent to read the guide provided with the code and then answer its questions one by one. DeepSeek's engineers have used programming agents to help write the code.
