Theft begins in Hérault

The events began in the Hérault on October 9, 2025, when the automated teller machine at the Saint-Gély-du-Fesc post office branch was torn away. This was a dramatic theft that was not an isolated case, as similar incidents had occurred in Lozère and Haute-Loire a few days earlier.

Similar methods used in multiple areas

Investigators established links between these different cases, noting a similar modus operandi: the perpetrators targeted automated teller machines, sometimes causing significant damage. To achieve their goals, they used agricultural or construction equipment previously stolen.

Organized crime linked to attacks

According to the Montpellier prosecutor's office, the investigations revealed the involvement of several organized individuals. The attacks were documented in five departments, and in February 2026, the Montpellier prosecutor's office requested the opening of a judicial inquiry for organized theft and participation in a criminal association.

Expanding scope of the investigation

The investigation then grouped the attacks committed in the Hérault, Lozère, and Haute-Loire, as well as other similar incidents that occurred in Ardèche and the Tarn during the first half of 2026. In total, the damage caused by the thefts and vandalism is estimated at approximately 745,000 euros.
