Coronation Street fans can now get a sneak peek of Thursday’s (September 24) episode, which will air on ITV1 at 8:30pm. The episode features a powerful scene involving Debbie Webster, played by Sue Devaney, who has been living with early-onset vascular dementia. In a poignant moment, Debbie approaches a woman for directions to the Rovers Return, a local pub in the fictional town of Weatherfield, but is unable to recognize the person she is speaking to. The woman, played by Anya Williams, initially appears to be a stranger to Debbie. She guides Debbie on how to find the pub and even offers to walk with her, but Debbie declines, choosing to go alone. As she walks away, the camera reveals the woman to be Toyah Battersby, played by Georgia Taylor, who is returning to the role after previously portraying the character. The scene is emotional, showing Toyah’s visible sadness as she watches Debbie struggle with her condition. This storytelling technique—using different actors to play familiar characters—has been used before on British soap operas to highlight the effects of dementia. In 2017, the show Emmerdale used a similar approach during an episode focusing on a character’s battle with the disease. The method helps to convey the confusion and emotional toll experienced by those living with dementia, as well as the impact on their loved ones. Debbie’s storyline is expected to continue for some time, with her son Carl Webster, played by Jonathan Howard, describing the narrative as “very sad.” Howard praised Sue Devaney, who is contracted to appear on the show until August, and noted that the storyline is becoming more intense. Coronation Street continues to air weeknights at 8:30pm on ITV1, and episodes can also be viewed online from 7am on ITVX and YouTube.
